Universal pushes the reboot of "The Mummy" and "Mission Impossible" star Tom Cruise has already officially signed on for the project.
Tom Cruise's "The Mummy" reboot, which was originally slated for a Mar. 24, 2017 release, is announced by Universal to have an official release date on June 9, 2017. The reboot will be helmed by Alex Kurtzman and he will be producing it as well, alongside Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel.
Penning the script will be Jon Spaihts, who is known for his works in "Prometheus" and "The Darkest Hour;" Spaihts is also set to work for the screenplay of "Doctor Strange" starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
Jon Mone, Universal's executive vice president of production and Jay Polidoro, vice president of development will be overseeing the project.
Alex Kutzman and Chris Morgan, according to Variety, were tapped by Universal Pictures to help develop a universe for the studio in which its monster movie library is front and center. Accordingly, these monster universe films are expected to make appearances in each other's installments and then conclude in an "Avengers-style" tie-in film.
The report added that unlike the "Mummy" franchise starring Brendan Fraser, Tom Cruise's reboot will be set in the present times. And Cruise, although not producing, will be a major part of the film development.
Alongside Tom Cruise's confirmation to star in "The Mummy" reboot, it was also announced that "Kingsman: Secret Service" star Sofia Boutella will be playing a female reincarnation of the Mummy.
Did Cruise made the right decision of accepting the lead role for "The Mummy" reboot? The Independent has this to say: "It's odd to see Cruise hitch his horse to a franchise like this."
"His career's been so carefully considered, it's such a rare thing to actually see the actor make a definitively wrong step," it added.
"So maybe 'The Mummy' will turn out great. Maybe all this fear is completely misjudged and we should all be entirely excited to see Tom Cruise drive a motorcycle up the side of a pyramid. Which will presumably be a thing that happens."
