In a recent interview, Bill Nye shared his childhood inspiration which pushed him to be one of the most esteemed and recognizable scientist personality he is now. Many would be surprised that the book that caught the attention of Nye is one of the famous books of a well-known bio chemist author Isaac Asimov titled "The Left Hand of the Electron." According to Nye, if the book didn't catch his attention when he was a child, there is a possibility that he wouldn't be so interested in science.
"The Left Hand of the Electron" was published back in 1972 and it is the ninth book out of the seventeen that the "Foundation" writer wrote. According to a synopsis published by Yahoo News, the book is about "properties like electron-spin and chirality - which is a property in nature that represents asymmetry" . Bill Nye has since recently gushed about his love for the Asimov classic.
"The Left Hand of the Electron" was really influential to me. I just remembered having the idea that protons, neutrons, electrons - we call them particles, but maybe there's something else"
The book opened the eyes of Nye making him realize that there's a lot more that he doesn't know. Bill Nye has also elaborated on the concept from the book that struck most for him. According to Nye, he was mainly interested in the idea of left and right hand in chemistry.
"This idea that things have chirality - that there's a left and right hand in chemistry - and the mysterious properties of particles that you only discover if you build these enormous atom smashers" explained Bill Nye.
Nye also admitted during the interview that it's been awhile since he read "The Left Hand of the Electron" he however was quick to recommend the Asimov book to both young and old readers.
