Oscar-nominated star Tom Hardy has become one of Hollywood's most badass actors today, especially with his characters in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "The Revenant."

Asked about manhood, the actor said it's not about masculinity but about empathy, which the actor definitely has a lot of (as said by Good Magazine).

In a feature titled "Tom Hardy On Being A Real Man," the 38-year old actor talked about what to him is a real man and he brought the message across quite well: "Be Masculine, Not Macho."

"You have to fully accept your own masculinity," Tom Hardy told The Red Bulletin when asked if a certain degree of violence is also an expression of masculinity.

"But that has nothing to do with being macho," Hardy added. "It also means that you can be like a mother; you can have a caring role. It's about consideration, patience and cognitive skills. And if you can manage that, then when you die, someone will turn around and say, 'Now he was a good man."

And on being a good man in "a professional sense," Tom Hardy said that one should show mutual respect.

"You have to give your colleague that much when you know that he's been a master of his craft for a good while already," he said. "You say to yourself, 'I'll help this guy however I can. I'll try and make his job easier.' But there needs to be reciprocity. You help the other guy and he helps you."

And accordingly, Hardy said that respect plus discipline and the right amount of pressure and talent is the way to win battles. On the other hand, he reminded that one can "balls it up, look stupid and fail."

"But you carry on," he said. "You can't win a fight if you haven't been knocked out first. You don't know what winning is if you don't know what losing feels like."
