It's been common knowledge that the New York Knicks have been in dire need of an upgrade in their point guard position.
The team's current rotation of Spanish veteran Jose Calderon and Langston Galloway have caused the team to be one of the league's slowest offenses. In an article by Benjamin Hoffman of nytimes.com, he states that for the 4th straight season, the Knicks are at the bottom of the league in terms of fast break points.
One of the team's coveted point guards is Memphis Grizzlies starting guard Mike Conley Jr. as per dailyknicks.com. Though expected to be one of the top free agent point guards in free agency, the Knicks and Brooklyn Nets are rumored to be the top prospects.
However, it was reported by yibada.com that it's possible that the Grizzlies let go of their longtime grit and grind principles and move towards small ball a la the defending NBA champions Golden State Warriors. That decision would ultimately lead to trading away Conley, the burly forward Zach Randolph and soon to be free agent Jeff Green.
The issue with most teams in trading for Conley would be his contract soon to end after this season which does not give them assurance he would stay with them beyond this season. Despite this, the Knicks are confident that if they traded for him, Conley would stay in the Big Apple for a longer tenure.
With the lure of New York City's bright lights and immense fan base, Conley would also be enticed to join a core of sensational rookie Kristaps Porzingis and All-Star Carmelo Anthony. The potential trade would be Conley, Courtney Lee, Russ Smith going to the Knicks for Langston Galloway, Kyle O'Quinn, Jose Calderon, Derrick Williams and the 2018 1st round pick.
The trade would give the Grizzlies some young assets and a point guard familiar with the team's star player Marc Gasol as both were teammates on the Spanish Olympic team.
