Singapore is one of the top destinations in Asia, not only for leisure and travel but for business and investment as well. A tiger economy with an impressive history that highlights the nation's rise from a third world to a first world country in just decades, Singapore is known for its strict set of rules and regulations.
However, it seems that strict regulations are not enough to combat the rising air pollution levels in Singapore. According to the National Environment Agency, the country has reached unhealthy levels in terms of air pollution. This is due to the light smoke cause by forest fires in Indonesia, reaching Singapore with the changing direction of the wind.
Singapore is currently in the middle of the "haze season". This is the season when smoke from forest fires are clearing in Indonesia, traditionally expected to choke the air. This year has been haze free, according to reports, despite anticipation that this year will be worse than the haze in 2013.
The Pollution Standards Index, a three-hour analysis of Singapore's pollution status, broke above level 100. This level is beyond the "unhealthy" mark. The reading remained at this level, confirmed by the Singaporean government agency. From a level of 111 recorded at 7 am, it eased down to level 80 after a few hours later.
The NEA lists a reading of 101-200 as unhealthy. Within this range, people with existing respiratory or heart diseases are advised to reduce physical activity and exertion, and are encouraged to stay indoors.
In June this year, smoke practically blanketed Singapore. This pushed the air pollution index to level 401. This prompted the Singapore parliament to pass a bill proposing fines for companies that contribute to pollution. This will be applicable both to companies operating on the island and those outside the island. Authorities are still studying how this law is to be enforced.
