From the time that Jesse Eisenberg was cast as Lex Luthor for "Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice," a lot of fans were worried whether the actor will deliver in portraying such an iconic villain.
We have seen a couple of trailers for the upcoming DC Cinematic Universe's "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" and we have seen how Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor is really different from the previous portrayals of the villainous characters. Such memorable portrayals include that of Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and the legendary Clancy Brown. Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, on the other hand, aside from being bald, is modern and young.
In a recent interview with Comic Book Movie, Jesse Eisenberg justified the significant departure of his Lex Luthor from the past portrayals.
"The character is in line with what audiences want to see now," Eisenberg told CBM. "Which is a modern, psychologically realistic concept of Lex Luthor. His motivations are multifaceted; he has a way of using language that's specific to the way his mind works; he struggles with interesting philosophical dilemmas like that of individual having too much power, even if that individual is using that power for good."
Eisenberg added that if he chose to stick with the traditional portrayal of the villain, is will rob Lex Luthor of "necessary theatricality" and also rob the actor from his ability to really act. And while the previous movies with Lex Luthor were interesting to watch, Eisenberg said that they feel unrelated.
"I'd read the comic books, but I figured out pretty quickly there's not much there that relates to an acting role," he said. "You know the old joke about actors-if you're playing the messenger, you think it's a play about the messenger-but the main characters are wonderful as well."
LazyGamer.net commented that only time can tell if Jesse Eisenberg, indeed, can actually deliver as Lex Luthor.
"I'm still not wholly convinced of Eisenberg as Luthor, but I do believe he has the potential to pull off the type of cam malevolence-tinted by the self-belief that he's actually doing the right thing-that Luthor needs," LazyGamer wrote.
