(Photo : en.wikipedia.org) Enterovirus 68 is a respiratory illness commonly affecting children in the summer and fall season.

Health officials together with the Centers for Disease Control in the United States are now working hand in hand in determining the root cause of paralysis of nine children in the state recently. Four out of the eight children tested positive for Enterovirus 68, a respiratory illness that causes respiratory disease with accompanying muscle weakness, fever and flu-like symptoms. Usually it affects children during the summer and fall seasons. The ninth case was still unclear and the child will be tested as soon as possible.

In the United States, the first outburst of Enterovirus 68 infection was in California in 1962 where scientists discovered the viral cause of respiratory diseases among children. Consequently, there were reported outbreaks from 2005 to 2011 in countries like the Philippines, United States, Netherlands, and Japan.

Enterovirus 68 is considered a common illness in many countries though some may not even manifest the symptoms. Children are at most risk in acquiring the disease because their immune system is not well developed yet. Furthermore, those who were not previously infected with the virus may manifest mild to severe symptoms. In adults, those who are immune-compromised may manifest severe symptoms.

According to Dr. Larry Wolk,, chief medical officer of the Colorado Department of Public Health, "It is a range of arm or leg weakness that can be considered mild but in some cases, can lead to paralysis."  He said that those infected were ages one to 18 years old.

The Centers for Disease Prevention said that there were confirmed 277 cases in all 40 states from August to September this year. However, they also reiterated that these months are the peak season for Enterovirus infection.

Red Cross also warned the public that this illness may seem simple but when progression becomes out of hand, it can cause severe symptoms. They gave the public prevention tips to combat the occurrence of the disease. These tips include avoiding sharing utensils, bottles and drinking cups, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and of course, washing the hands regularly. Hand washing is a simple procedure that can prevent spread of illness.
