Elgin-based company, John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc. has announced their voluntary recall of their nut products that might be contaminated with salmonella. Their nut products, which were distributed to over nine states, has underwent routine sampling conducted by the United States Food and Drug Administration and showed that a package of their Fisher Chopped Walnuts has salmonella.
Salmonella is a microorganism that can cause serious and fatal infections among vulnerable people such as in children, frail or elderly. The infection, salmonellosis, is a bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract. Such infection can often lead to cause typhoid fever, food poisoning, gastroenteritis, enteric fever and other illnesses.
Common symptoms associated with salmonella infection are vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. In serious conditions, the bacteria can find its way to the bloodstream that can cause more serious complications like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis and sepsis.
The recall is for their product, Fisher 8-ounce Chopped Walnuts and Fisher 8-ounce Pecan Cookie Pieces which were packaged in plastic bags. The good news is, there is no reported illness related to the products which were distributed widely in the United States, including in several online shops.
Consumers who have recently purchased the said products with the "Best By Dates" of 10/31/15, 11/01/15, 11/03/15, should not consumer the products. These were distributed to stores in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas or online. The products should be returned to the store where they purchased them and they can get full refund or replacement.
All products should be returned to the stores to prevent any diseases related to salmonella, which can be a fatal disease if not treated immediately.
