If you've been to Hinckley and bought some chocolates from Aldi, you may want to check the brand and the best-before date. It's possible that yours is part of an immediate recall.
Aldi, specifically the ones in Hinckley and the rest of Midlands, is currently requesting their customers who have bought Choceur chocolates to return them and get a full refund. Choceur Treasures with a best-before date of September 1, 2015, may be contaminated with Salmonella after a sample from the batch tested positive of the bacterium. These Treasures are the ones with hazelnut covered with milk chocolate and waffle.
As one of the biggest and most popular discount stores especially in the United Kingdom, Aldi's sold these chocolates in 200g packs at a discount.
The Food Standards Agency is therefore calling everyone who has bought these chocolates to return them immediately to the closest Aldi store and to never eat it. Other than Treasures, other Choceur products tested negative. The one subject to recall are also found in Midlands, so Aldi outlets outside the region are not affected. It's unclear how the bacterium ended up in the chocolate.
This isn't the first time that Salmonella has been found in a chocolate. Around summer 2006, Cadbury, one of the most popular chocolate brands in the world, was subject of an investigation after more than 30 people became ill. It was later discovered that the rare strain actually affected over 5 of its products due to a leaking pipe in a plant located in Malbrook, which is responsible for creating the crumb mixture. Over a million had to be recalled.
After the probe was over, Cadbury was fined with £1 million for violating food safety and hygiene regulations.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause food poisoning, enteric fever, and typhoid fever.
