Childbirth is one of the most fulfilling, loveliest experiences any woman will ever go through, but for this one woman, it was simply sheer joy especially since she's seeing her baby despite being legally blind.
Kathy Beitz is 29 years old and suffering from a unique type of macular degeneration that causes the blind spots in her central vision. In other words, she's considered legally blind, and she's been in this condition since 11 years old.
Thus, she never thought that she'd be able to see her baby Aksel personally. But things got so much better for her when she was provided with a high-tech pair of glasses called eSight.
According to its official website, these glasses are truly meant for the legally blind, allowing them to see. The bulky-looking device is equipped with a camera and a display screen right in front of the eyes of the wearer. When activated, the glass's camera starts picking up real-time video and, using advanced computing, displays it in the screen near the eyes. It also has different kinds of hardware, such as the headset which contains the mentioned technologies and a carrier frame to help support or carry the glass's weight.
It also has a processing unit that appears to be a very small control box that does all the legwork.
One set of it, which has already been registered in Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can cost as much as $15,000. It cannot also be paid through insurance yet. However, through fund-raising efforts, the company was able to provide Beitz with one. With it, she's able to fully take care of her baby and other tasks including grocery shopping.
The heartwarming meeting between the baby and the mother was captured in a YouTube video, which was later shared by the mom's sister. In the video, one can see Beitz gushing over her baby, who's already 6 weeks old as of press time.
