While fans are still cooped up waiting for Square Enix to announce the final release date for "Kingdom Hearts 3," the publisher unveils what is called "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" and "Kingdom Hearts 2.9" and now, fans are confused.
Latest reports have revealed that while "Kingdom Hearts 3" release date remains to be announced, updates on "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" and "Kingdom Hearts 2.9" revealed that somehow these installments are connected to the launching of Sora's next adventure.
While the arrival of "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" and "Kingdom hearts 2.9" have confused fans, Polygon explained what is happening and the plans of Square Enix on the matter. The report said, "Square Enix announced the bundle, which will include a remake of the Nintendo 3DS game 'Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD,' 'Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover' and 'Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage. 'They lead into 'Kingdom Hearts 3'."
Basically, "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" is a collection of previous and new materials that will lead to the next story of Sora with Donald and Goofy. The same report also revealed that "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" will be released for PS4 sometime in 2016. There has been no specific date for the launch yet, but some speculations have already surfaced.
Wired pointed out that "Once 'Kingdom Hearts 2.8' is released in 2016, the entire 'Kingdom Hearts' series will be collected across PlayStations 3 and 4. As for 'Kingdom Hearts 3' itself, it'll probably be out sometime between the release of 'Final Fantasy XV' and the heat death of the universe."
Meanwhile, "Kingdom Hearts 2.9" is allegedly a small adventure game that is also rumored to come before the release date of "Kingdom Hearts 3." According to MoviePilot, "Kingdom Hearts 2.9" remains to be a big question.
"Is 'Kingdom Hearts 2.9' a small adventure for us to engage with before we hop into 'Kingdom Hearts 3' on Xbox One and PS4? the report pointed out. "Or is it yet another collection in the same vein as 'Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5' and 'Kingdom Hearts 2.5' Remixes."
Although Square Enix did announce that a "Kingdom Hearts" title will be launched in 2016, this doesn't mean "Kingdom Hearts 3" yet. So, should fans expect a 2017 release date? Hopefully, not.
