A trans man opened up about the biggest surprise of his life: he was pregnant.
Kayden Coleman, then 27, was trying to transition into a man for almost 10 years when he decided he wanted to undergo double mastectomy. But before he could do that, he needed to stop his testosterone injections for six weeks. A checkup led to the discovery of his pregnancy in 2013.
The signs were there: he was having back pains and his belly started getting round and bigger. However, since he was on injection for the last five years, he thought he was simply gaining weight. In fact, he felt so out of shape he wanted to go to the gym.
With the shocking news, he and his husband, Elijah, who started dating a year before, had to plan for both their wedding and the baby's arrival.
His pregnancy, however, was riddled with some challenges. It forced him to eventually come out to his and his partner's family, who did not have the slightest clue that he was transgender, and caused a short tension with Elijah's family.
Looking like a man but pregnant with a child, he often received awkward glances from other people who would not believe if he told them he was carrying a child.
His delivery was not also entirely pleasant with medical students watching and him feeling as if he was being treated like an experiment. After that, he had to suffer from a long bout of post-natal depression.
Fortunately, partner Elijah was there to support him. When he had to quit to focus on battling depression, Elijah worked and helped in taking care of their daughter, Azaelia.
Now, little Azaelia is the joy of the family, and Kayden admits he could not leave without her. The couple, however, is no longer planning to add another.
